As is the normal rotation, it was England’s turn to hold the National Championships. It was jointly hosted this year by TRECGB and KTS (Keysoe and Three Shires TREC Club). It ran like clockwork as was to be expected. The catering supplied for all helpers and on Saturday evening, was excellent, a KTS trademark of their events.
The venue was in the grounds of Winwick Hall in Northamptonshire, which is famed for being the home of Elephant Polo! Many of the PTV obstacles were decorated with creative artwork and carpentry, and a fair few polo mallets, to honour this fact. Our host, Bruce Green, wandered around the event during the two days, happily chatting about his polo days. He kindly presented the awards on Sunday.
Seventeen SETG members made the short (by Summer Series TREC standards) journey north, some on Thursday and the rest on Friday. They were joined by several club members who assisted with varied judging responsibilities – many thanks to them, without whom these events could not run.
The competition was combined for all levels from Level 1 to Level 4. On Saturday the L1 competitors did their MA and PTV rounds and the L2 to L4s went out to navigate their way around the beautiful countryside doing the POR. This was reversed on the Sunday.
The PTV course was spread across many acres of undulating ground. There was a good mix of the slower obstacles and the speedier obstacles, as was to be expected of a championship course. The obstacles were spread out, giving riders the chance to have a canter or two. The ground was firm (in racing terms!) and cracked in places due to the summer weather, but any hazardous areas were clearly marked making the optimum route safe to navigate.
The TREC GB staff, and a couple of helpers, were contained within the “office” compiling the scores, which culminated in the prize giving at around 5pm on Sunday afternoon.
